With 100 companies and 5.500 employees, the German watch and clock industry is one of the world's most important producer and exporter of watches and clocks.
Exports are very important for the German watch and clock industry. Many companies export 70 % or more of their production. The export to Japan in the 1st half of 2011 added up to more than 25 Mio. €.
In addition to the jewelry center Pforzheim there is the gemstone cutting center of Idar-Oberstein. This international trading place has its origin in the rough stones that were once mined there.
Today the term "IdarCut" stands all over the world for superior cutting, innovative gem design and distinguished qualities. In a field of strong international competition Idar-Oberstein has been able to maintain its place as one of the top gem centers of the world.
